Burial at Sea
Naval Hospital Bremerton serves as the port of embarkation for all Burial at Sea ceremonies in the Puget Sound region. Retired Service Members of the US Air Force, US Army, US Coast Guard, US Marines, US Navy who can show proof of Honorable Discharge, Honorable Service or Retirement are eligible for Burial at Sea. Both cremated remains (cremains) and full body ceremonies can be accommodated. US Navy ships, Submarines and Helo Aircraft are capable of handling cremains.
To facilitate a Burial at Sea, you will need to provide four forms to our office:
1.Burial at Sea Authorization/Request Form (provided by our office)
2.DD 214, or other proof of honorable discharge or retirement
3.Death Certificate
4.Burial Transit Permit or a Cremation Certificate
After Burial at Sea is completed: the family is notified via letter from the ship or submarine’s Commands Officer, providing the date of the Burial at Sea, time of the day and latitude and longitude. The Burial Flag is also provided to the family.
